They have played numerous gigs across England most notably at In The City Festival, Futuresonics Festival and the Strut showcase, and have become known for their energetic performances. Their sound is both universal and genuine which is how the band account for followings as far reaching as America and Hungry, where there have already been a number of requests for them to play.
The band is fronted by Elly, a Devonshire lass who grew up listening to her Dad’s bands and even getting a bit too close for comfort at times. ‘I have a vague recollection of this giant of a man play fighting with me, I must have been four or five, anyway I came out of it with a bloody nose…very rock and roll!’ Having studied acting and film and learning a variety of instruments (for about five minutes) she was eventually persuaded by Jay that she should sing, and went on to learn with a passion she had not reserved for anything else. Her voice has been likened to both Kate Bush and Kylie. Jay plays bass, his distinct sound inspired by Eric Avery, Simon Gallup and Killing Joke. A multi instrumentalist and producer Jay also DJ’s as part of The Codette Soundsystem. ‘My love for music started when I was bought my first record player for Christmas at the age of six, where the other kids were out playing on their scooters I was inside rummaging through my sisters record collection and listening to crackly vinyl .’ Jacob is the keyboard aficionado who brings a scaffoldings worth of synths to life, often playing three or four keyboards in one song. Raised on electronic music of all types, Jacob discovered sequencers at fifteen and went on to produce his own music. ‘My first synth was a Casio CZ5000, already obsolete by that time but it’s still a favourite!’ Jacob is also the other half of the Codette Soundsystem. Chris, who plays guitar. With his many effects boxes he conjures up a multitude of soundscapes. Playing since he was young he was offered a place at a music conservatoire but couldn’t see himself as the next John Williams so he went off to university to study history. After university he began playing again and then bumped into Codette where he found a home for his range of noises. The newest member of the band is Al, who plays the Drums. Al has played in bands ranging from southern US rock to extreme death metal, but upon hearing that Codette needed a drummer he decided to turn his skills to the challenging pop genre. Being friends with Jay and Elly for some time allowed him to comfortably fit in very quickly and set about bringing his own unique palliate of grooves to the band. Al's influences include Mike Portnoy, Neil Peart, Buddy Rich, Akira Jimbo, Gavin Harrison, Thomas Lang to name but a few!
Codette have recently won the weekly vote on XFM Manchester and will go on to be judged by a panel of industry movers and shakers along with the other winners from this month.
